In the face of widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Americans across the nation provided support on whatever level they could. In Austin, a grassroots effort called "Katrina Help Austin" helped more than a thousand families affected by Katrina.

Louisiana family flees New Orleans for Texas, doesn’t plan to return

For three days following the landfall of Hurricane Katrina, Cheryl Lewis and her family helplessly watched as the water crawled up the stairs, threatening to overtake the second floor of their New Orleans home. Each time the floodwaters rose another step, the family marked the waterline with a black marker and hoped that it would not pursue them further.
